Sing it!

Jack has a cd from Vacation Bible School that we were listening to on our morning commute today. There is this one gospel song on there that he loves. First time it came on I hear him rocking out like "Go and TELL what Jesus can do ... ALL the power of Jeeeeee-sus!"

And below is a picture of what he looks like when he's singing. Hand clutched to his chest - eyes closed - belting it out with all his little heart and soul.

I started singing along and he shouted "BREAK IT DOWN Mommy!"

VBS 2009

Today was Jack and Park Ranger Mima's first day of Vacation Bible School. This year's theme is "Discovery Canyon - Discover the Wonders of the Word!". I stuck around for a while after drop-off this morning to take a few pics for the blog. Took out my camera - turned it on annnnnnd - nothing. Battery dead. MAN! Luckily I had my cell phone on me which just so happens to have a camera.

Jack and his park ranger ...

Jack was holding his ears because a lot of people were clapping and he doesn't like it when a lot of people clap.

Doesn't he totally look like he's in a real canyon?

Each day all groups meet in the church reception hall for opening song and a few skits illustating different bible stories. The skits are put on by the teen helpers ....

Teen helper in the Moses skit: (standing in front of the crowd of roughly 150) Before I start I need a few volunteers. Who wants to be an Israelite?

Jack: (jumps to his feet and raises both hands) ME! Pick me - I WANT to be an Israelite!!!"

Here he is with a couple other Israelites, Moses and a few Egyptians:

We (the crowd sitting on the floor) got to be the Red Sea. Moses parted us, then the Egyptians chased the Israelites and the Israelites ran through the sea. The teen helper then shot the Egyptians with a water gun. Amen!
Jack mid Exodus ..

SIDENOTE: As the sea parting and Israelite exodus-ing was going on, I was thinking "Wait, where is the ark?". Um - yeah - that was NOAH not Moses! Apparently someone needs to sign me up for adult Vacation Bible School.

After opening songs/skits they break up into groups and go to different activity centers. Jack, Mima, and the rest of the Olivia Owl group went to music for their first activity. Technically the parents are supposed to be long gone by this time - but I have connections so I was able to tag along. I'm like VIP or something.

During music the kiddos learned different God songs and little hand/arm movements to go along with the lyrics. The music teacher was quite energetic and very into her little hand/arm movements. As she was demonstrating one song Jack exclaimed "What in the WORLD?" then turned to me and said "This lady is CRAZY". Thankfully he did not quite say it loud enough for the crazy lady, oops I mean the music teacher to hear. After he said it Mima looks at me and says "did he just say .." to which I responded "Oh YES he did .." and we both broke down laughing. It was then that I realized that I best leave and go to work before Mima and I got put in time out or something.

But I could not leave before "This Little Light of Mine" (I'm gonna let it shiiiiiiine). CLMT (CrazyLadyMusicTeacher) was singing along and all the kids had their index finger lights up and shining. CLMT is like "I'm gonna let it shiiiine - DON'T blow it out!" (Remix!). At that point Jack turns his back to her, crouches down, and blows out his finger/light. REBEL!

Guess that little light of his was done shining.

Then the Olivia Owls and Park Ranger Mima went on to Arts&Crafts and I went on to work. I wonder if they made pot holders using multi-colored string and plastic pegboards. Ohhh or friendship bracelets!

Tomorrow I'm totally staying for Arts&Crafts.

Lessons Learned

So Wednesday - out of nowhere - as my mom and Jack were driving to SoccerTots - Jack says "Mima (that is what he calls my mom) I don't get it - WHY did Jesus die on the cross?".

SIDENOTE: Jack has Vacation Bible School coming up next week. My mom volunteered to be the lead teacher for his class. And by "my mom volunteered" I mean "I volunteered her". As a lead Park Ranger (this year vacation Bible School has a wild canyon theme and the teachers are referred to as "Park Rangers". And yes they requested that my mom wear a park ranger hat and suggested she accessorize with a walking stick - I'm not even kidding). Where was I? Oh yes - as a lead Park Ranger my mom was provided with a cd with all the music they'll be learning during Bible School this year. She and Jack have been listening to the cd in the car lately - I assume there is a song that talks about Jesus dying on the cross.

So anyway - Jack asks the Jesus question and, if I know Mima, I'd bet her answer went a little something like "Uh - um - well see there was a lot of sin - and Jesus, well - He was the Son of God and well because of that he had a responsibility and he - well he actually lived for quite a while and then - well there was the sin and - um - so for our sins - see there was this Pontius Pilate guy and then he sent Jesus to King Herod and .." And, if I know Jack, at this point he would cut in with "What ARE you talking about, Mima? That doesn't even make any sense!". Ultimately, Mima, not wanting to provide an unacceptable answer, suggested that Jack wait until Vacation Bible School next week where he could ask a priest his question. He graciously let her off the hook.

Driving home from SoccerTots they pass by my mom's church where Jack attends pre-school during the year (also where he will be attending Vacation Bible School, incidentally). As they are passing the church Jack shouts "MIMA! STOP the car. There is St. Mary's. There will be a priest there and I can ask him my question. Can I please go in and ask my question? PLEASE!".

Well how are you gonna say no to that?!

So she stops. They go into the church and approach the lady at the desk in the front office. Jack walks right up to her and says "Excuse me. Is there a priest here? I REALLY need to ask him a question". The lady tells them that the "on duty" priest, Father Ephrem, is busy but that she would go see if Father Stephan could see him.

SIDENOTE: If memory serves I believe Father Stephan is a HOTTIE. If I wasn't married to the love of my life, and he weren't married to God, and if we didn't have such drastically different views on Roe vs. Wade, he and I would totally be an item.

Lady-at-the-desk-in-the-front-office (pretty sure that is her actual name) comes back with Father Stephan in tow and ...

Father Stephan: Hello, is there something I can help you with?
Jack: Yes. My name is Jack. Why did Jesus die on the cross?
Father Stephan: Well son, he died on the cross because he loves us.

With that Jack nodded, said "well that makes sense", and headed for the door.

Lessons learned from this story:
Lesson 1 - Adults are, in general, complicated. Children - they are simple. They don't want long convoluted answers. They just want the truth.
Lesson 2 - I am, in all likelihood, going straight to hell for the hot priest comment. I certainly hope they serve beer there.

An oldie but goodie ....

Michael Michael, Aunt Stephanie and Evan ROCK!

So the day before yesterday a package arrived for JGif from Michael Michael, Aunt Stephanie and Evan. At first I thought it was something for me. A surprise from a secret admirer with a ton of money that he/she didn't know what to do with. Perhaps a new shirt or skirt that had recently come off back-order that I totally forgot I had purchased online. But NO. It was for JACK. Once again something for JACK.

JACK JACK JACK!

Wait, where was I?

Ahhh yes. The package. (For JACK.)

It was filled with things from Michael and Stephanie's recent travels. There was a Harvard Soccer shirt which Jack wore to SoccerTots today ...

He actually said "Look at this pose, Mommy!"

Seriously could you not just DIE from the cuteness?

There was also a "Shakey Egg". Well that is what we called it. Michael Michael said it was a "Confetti Egg". It's a hollowed out decorated egg with construction paper confetti inside. You are supposed to crush it in your hand (says Michael) or stomp on it (says Stephanie) and say "Ole!". Egg shell breaks - confetti inside goes everywhere - good times! I showed it to Jack and asked him if he wanted to stomp on it and/or crush it in his hand. He picked it up and shouted "NO! I am NOT doing that. I want to keep it forever and ever and shake it!" (hence the name "Shakey Egg"). With that he placed the egg on the counter and (you can totally see what is coming here, right?) roll ... roll ... roll ... (it was like slow motion) .. CRASH. Broken shell. Confetti everywhere. SO not good times for Jack.

If that picture doesn't make you cry then Mick Jagger was right - you have a heart of stone.

So I taped shakey egg up and all was right in the world again. YEY! Here is a post-taping picture.

I am right-handed so I shoot (photos of course) with my right hand. The egg was in my left hand. And by "in" I mean "on" (due to a small left hand disability which prevents me from actually turning my left hand. I'm being serious. You should see me try to get change at the McDonald's drive thru window.) Needless to say eggs balanced on the top of knuckles aren't the most stable (you can totally see what is coming here AGAIN, right?). Topple ... topple ... CRASH.

Oops.

I do keep things interesting, don't I? Don't think so? Read on.

There was also an adorable "Don't Mess With Texas" shirt. As I write this JGif is sleeping and I realize I forgot to take a picture of him in that shirt ... but I really wanted to post a picture of that shirt too ... and it wouldn't fit me ... soooo...

If you don't hear from me tomorrow it's b/c Belle the cat killed me in my sleep.

THANK YOU Michael Michael, Aunt Steph and Evie Evie. We all love you SO much! Well, all of us except for Belle.

Out and about - Norfolk

So do you have any idea how many things we've done that I've neglected to blog? About a million. I am making it my goal this week to catch up. First - our trip to Norfolk!

So back in MarchAprilMay (this is why I need to blog as we go. I forget things easily. It was definitely one of those months. I think.) we took a trip to Norfolk for the weekend.

Our first stop once we got to the Norfolk area was the aquarium (which is technically in VA Beach. I think. I swear I'll blog faster next time). They have a big sea lion tank right out front near the entrance. Note how Jack greets the sea lions as tho they are long lost friends.

You know the boy does LOVE the water. On our recent trip to Ocean City (blogging about that soon. Pinky swear) Jack stayed in the hotel pool one day for about 6 hours straight. Perhaps the kid was a sea lion in a past life!

The little blue thing in Jack's hand is his camera. He took pictures of everything in sight. That's my boy!

Our friend, Mr. Stingray.

Jack was big on looking at them. Not so big on trying to touch them. I touched one! Of course no one got a picture.

There was a little hatchling center (totally made up that term) where we saw some recent hatchlings.

Only thing CA-uter then new baby turtles is Jack taking pictures of new baby turtles.

On our way out of the aquarium we came upon a live fish feeding demonstration. As I tried to sneak Jack past the crowd the announcer guy called for child volunteers. I tried to sneak faster but Jack's "ME ME PICK ME! I'm NOT leaving yet PICK ME!" made him quite the obvious volunteer choice.

If you look carefully above kneeling-down-red-shirt guy's head you'll see the scuba diver/fish feeder. He was kneeling in front of the child volunteers throwing down underwater hand signs. East coast represent!

We loved our hotel. It was the HiltonHolidayDaysInn (must.blog.faster) and it couldnt have been more perfect. Jack's favorite part? The indoor pool.

Ready .. set ....

Jump!

Jack is an excellent jumper.

I think our favorite part of the trip was the Norfolk Children's Museum. SO very cool. The bottom floor has all kinds of different activities and the top floor has a HA-uge room with nothin' but model trains! It's like the place was built for our boy.

Jack row-row-rowing his boat.

In the bubble room - Jack and I were pulling a giant bubble wand up to encase us in a giant bubble! Look at the intense concentration - I am apparently serious business when it comes to giant bubbles.

There was a measuring thing-a-ma-bob. That was totally the name of it. Shut-up.

There was also a little miniaturized town where the kiddos could play. Here is JGif working at the grocery store:

And driving a city bus:

They also had a dentist office that Jack would not go near for fear that a real dentist might pop out and try to check his teeth.

There was a room with giant musical instruments.

And another with giant computers.

And of course, there was this:

Jack was all "Yo Quiero Taco Bell!"

And then it was time for the trains!

They had these little tunnels you could crawl through where you ended up in a plastic bubble in the middle of the train action!

Jack Luhhhh-HUVED that part.

Apparently so did Mike!

On our last day in Norfolk we went to visit the USS Wisconsin. Berthed at Nauticus, the Battleship Wisconsin is one of the largest and last battleships ever built by the U.S. Navy. Explore its deck through a self-guided or audio tour that will take you back in time to experience this majestic ship that earned five battle stars during World War II. Yeah I totally didn't remember any of that - just grabbed it from the website here: http://www.nauticus.org/wisconsin.html

Here she is in all her glory (ships are "shes" right?):

How cool is that picture? Really I don't like to pat myself on the back but in this instance I must say PAT PAT PAT!

My boys manning the guns! And by "guns" I mean "pay-per-view binoculars".

How handsome are they!?!?!

What's that you say? "SO handsome!"?? Funny - that's exactly what I was thinking!

I can't even tell you how DONE Jack was at this point.

We're talkin' stick-a-fork-in-him D-O-N-E!

So with that we loaded up the car and hit the road for home.

Up next - something else we've done in the recent past. Which I don't really remember. I'll totally remember once I see the pictures tho. I think.

Doctor, doctor, gimme the news!

Folks - it appears that Jacks got a bad case of brilliant-itis.

Our boy had his 4 year well child check-up today. Upon completion of Jack's physical exam the doctor pronounced him the smartest child he has ever encountered in his 15 years as a pediatrician. Well okay what he actually said was "Everything looks great" and followed it with a wink - but we know what he really meant, don't we?

Jack is currently 47 and 1/2 pounds heavy by 44 and 1/2 inches tall. 100th percentile for his age on both accounts. Actually "off the charts" the nurse said. She asked me how tall Mike was. I told her 6'3 and she said Jack will probabally be taller. When the doctor looked at the charts he said Jack was the height of an "average" 6 year old and the height of an "average" 7 year old. That's our boy! NBA or NFL - here we come.

He had an eye test (20/40 in both eyes - totally "normal" for his age group) and an ear test (every time he heard a beep he had to say "Beep") which he passed with flying colors (He is the cutest little beeper ever).

The doctor was impressed with Jack's vocabulary and by his ability to reason - understand cause/effect, etc. He also said that we better start saving for law school after hearing Jack's dissertation on eating fruits and vegetables followed by his defense of why he chooses not to eat either at this time.

He had to get four (yes FOUR!) shots. He was a complete trooper and didn't even cry. Incidentally I did not cry either. I totally think I deserve a treat for that.

Here is the big guy on top of the slide at the McDonald's playground this past weekend.

Yeah yeah I know those places tend to be a veritable cesspool of germs. But I knew he'd have so much fun there so I just had to take him. Okay that last sentence - total lie. I didn't actually intend to take him there. Here is what really happened. Sunday morning Jack and I get in the car to head to the grocery store. Jack tells me he is hungry and I ask if he'd like me to swing my McDonalds and get him some pancakes and sausage. He says yes please and off we go. My intention was to just hit the drive thru. I forgot that this particular "Old McDonalds" (that is what Jack calls it) has a playplace right smack dab in the front surrounded in glass.

As soon as we pulled in to the parking lot:

Jack: (gasping as tho he was just informed that he won Powerball) MOMMY! We're going to the playground at Old McDonalds? You are TAKING ME IN THERE!?!? THANK YOU MOMMY THANK YOU! I am SO EXCITED. THANK YOU THANK YOU! You are the best Mommy EVER!"
ME: Um - okay.

The entire time we were in line waiting for our food Jack was dancing a little jig while singing "I am so ex-ci-TED. I am so ex-ci-TED:". SO darn cute.

The boy loves going new places and meeting new children. He made about a million friends playing in those McD's tunnels and slides. Lucky kids - I wonder if they caught his brilliant-itis!
